A good friend of mine gave me a book from Management Guru, Peter Drucker, and it is no surprise that Drucker predicted many of the major developments of the late twentieth century. The thing I like about Drucker’s thinking is that he didn’t just put out good ideas – he offered great Insights. Ideas really are a dime a dozen. We all get smart ideas. But to win, to get to world-class and make your mark, something more is needed. Insight. Brilliant ones actually.
Like this one from Drucker: “Get Good or Get Out.” It seems so obvious. But to me, when you go down to the roots of it, it’s revolutionary. See, the only way a business can become great is to be “BIW”: Best in the World at what you do. Well, most businesses – and so many people – are so busy doing so many things that they forget that focus creates mastery. You just can’t help but get better (and eventually brilliant) if you pick a few things (even better just One Big Thing) to concentrate on and then spend the rest of your days in specialization.
“Get Good or Get Out”. Why play in a space you can’t win in? Why waste your time? Instead, figure out your Big Bets. Get to know what you’re really good at. And then have the force of will to go there.
I have suffered from a business disorder called “FOMO”: Fear of missing out. It’s a common malaise of entrepreneurs. But after unsuccessfully attempting many activities and opportunities, I have learnt that whilst focus does not come naturally to me it is essential for anyone who wants to be successful. So Drucker is right, attempting everything like attempting nothing sucks the life out of you and that the old saying applies: if you chase two rabbits, you will get none.
So learn what you are really great at. Reflect on those abilities that others admire in you; Think about the capabilities that just come easily to you, that flow effortlessly from you and become best in the world at it.
