Following his State of the Nation Address in Cape Town, President Jacob Zuma hosted his annual Fundraising Gala at a star studded affair at the Westin Hotel in Cape Town, where over R2 million was raised in an auction, conducted by Auction Alliance, for the benefit of the President’s Jacob Zuma RDP Education Trust.
With a guest list including the top echelons of government and business, including Minister of Communications Roy Padayachie, UDM leader Bantu Holomisa, CEO’s and various captains of
industry, and high society; the temporary auction floor buzzed under the auctioneer, Ish Hendrick’s gavel and items knocked down included South African artwork for R200 000, a David Thale dress for R25 000, and a custom made wardrobe designed by “46664” clothing label was sold for R30 000. Financial pledges were also received from big businesses, including a R2 million pledge to the Foundation from a JHB based company.
“I had an executive order from the President of the Republic of South Africa to raise the maximum amount of money from all buyers!” announced Ish Hendricks from Auction Alliance, who noted that the guests were especially generous towards the charity on the evening, with the presence of the President in the room certainly helping the good cause along.
The Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust was formed in 1995 by its Patron, His Excellency Jacob G Zuma, President of the Republic of South Africa, who was a Member of the Executive Council of the Province of KwaZulu-Natal at that time.
